Current Opportunities
Position: Project Archaeologist Level 1 - 3
Location: Hamilton Office; projects are located across Ontario
Compensation: From $32 - $40+ per hour
Hours: Monday to Friday (weather dependent)
Expected Start Date: ASAP
The Role
Based out of one of several ARA offices, successful applicants will lead a crew of Field Technicians to conduct archaeological assessments and excavations throughout Ontario. Project Archaeologists alongside the leadership of a Division Manager will be responsible for ensuring the integrity and thorough documentation of fieldwork as well as providing Stage 1-4 workplans, initial analysis and recommendations based on the results of assessments.
Responsibilities and Competencies:
- Complete Stage 1-4 fieldwork using appropriate techniques and methods according to site type and conditions
- Ensure that all fieldwork meets the requirements of the Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists and associated Technical Bulletins, as issued by the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism
- Manage and mentor Field Technicians
- Complete accurate, detailed, and comprehensive field documentation
- Assist in the development of proposals for Stage 1-4 Archaeological Assessments
- Develop workplans for Stage 1-4 Archaeological Assessments
- Review fieldwork after assessment completion for quality control
- Provide initial analysis of fieldwork and recommendations for further work
- Professional and consistent engagement with First Nations communities
- Complete professional development assignments and additional tasks as assigned in the off-season.
Skills Required:
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
- Be physically able, with or without accommodation, to perform work requiring extensive periods of bending, kneeling, standing, lifting, and carrying objects up to 50 lbs
- Familiarization with Microsoft Office Suite considered an asset
- Possess a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, prolonged walking, and standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions
- Maintain an excellent work ethic and team-player attitude
- Exhibit strong attention to detail, with proven ability to follow specific instruction
- Be familiar with the use of modern digital devices and software (touch screen tablets, GPS devices, communications software, etc.)
- Exhibit proven leadership skills.
Requirements:
- Valid Professional or Research Licence with the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism. Valid Ontario driver's licence (minimum Class "G" or equivalent)
- Previous experience in a field director or an archaeology supervisory role
- First Aid/CPR certification considered as asset
- Required to drive company vehicles
- Willingness to travel within Ontario, must be available for out-of-town work for extended periods of time.
Position: Field Technician
Location: Hamilton Office; projects are located across Ontario.
Compensation: Starting at $25 per hour
Hours: Monday to Friday (weather dependent)
Employment Contract: Seasonal – seasons are expected to run until early December (weather dependent)
The Role
Successful applicant(s) will travel in a company vehicle or drive their personal vehicles to their assigned work site. Under the direction of experienced Project Archaeologists, the successful applicant(s) will assume responsibility for carrying out Stage 2-4 archaeological field work.
Responsibilities and Competencies:
- Complete Stage 2 - 4 field work using appropriate techniques and methods according to site type and conditions
- Ensure that all fieldwork meets the requirements of the Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists and associated Technical Bulletins, as issued by the Ministry
- Extensive excavation tasks, including excavation with shovels, carrying heavy buckets and screening for archaeological materials
- Perform long distance field walking and test pit surveys in dense woodland locations and uneven soil conditions
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety policies and procedures
- Physically able, with or without an accommodation, to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, lifting, and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs
- Ability to work in extreme heat
- Willingness to travel within Ontario, must be available for out-of-town work for extended periods
- Excellent work ethic and team-player attitude
- Strong attention to detail, with proven ability to follow specific instructions.
Requirements:
- Related post-secondary diploma/degree considered an asset
- 6 – 12 months of related field work experience an asset
- Capability to perform manual labour in outdoor environments, prolonged walking and standing on various terrain in a wide range of outdoor conditions
- Must be able to perform extensive manual labour for long periods of time in extreme environment conditions
- Ability to drive to project sites or meet at a designated ARA office to join the carpool is required
- Eligibility to be a crew carpool driver (25 years and older with a Class “G” license) considered a strong asset.
